IQA - Australian Prize Winners

Tonight was the awards night for the A World of Beauty - the annual fall Judged Show of the International Quilt Association at the International Quilt Festival Houston.
There were several Australian Winners tonight which was fantastic.
We have to send out a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Mariya Waters. Mariya was awarded First Place in the category of Miniature Quilts for her quilt Mini Magic (pictured below), I have seen this quilt and it is amazing. Mariya will be joining Berrima Patchwork  as a tutor at our Quilting in the Highlands Retreat in July 2013.

There were several other Australians who were awarded prizes including Linda Steele from Victoria who was awarded Third Place in the Embellished Category for her quilt Naturally Crazy. (pictured below, photo from the http://www.quilts.org/winners.html)
Elizabeth Camping from South Australia was awarded an Honorable Mention for her quilt Fantasy Seedpods in the Art-Abstract, Small Category. (pictured below, photo from the http://www.quilts.org/winners.html)

Helen Godden from Canberra also was award an Honorable Mention for her quilt Rainbow Lorikeet in the Art-Painted Surface Category. (pictured below photo from http://www.quilts.org/winners.html)

Now the next winner is not an Australian however I do know Gilbert Muniz and was fortunate to take a workshop with him last year. Gilbert was awarded First Prize in the Wearable Art Category for his piece Composition. This is a beautiful outfit with some much detail on the jacket. Below are some photos that I have taken of this outfit and the write up. Congrats Gilbert!

International Quilt Market Houston: Schoolhouse Lectures

Over the next several days I will be posting from the International Quilt Market and Festival at Houston. First up in Quilt Market which is a trade only event to show the latest fabrics, books, notion and more.
Today was Quilt Market Schoolhouse Series which occurs the day before Quilt Market opens. The purpose of Quilt Market Schoolhouse is to help us store owners to have a more successful store. There are 291 different classes on offer with a wide range of topics. The emphasis is to introduce new products, techniques or to expand our existing programs in place in our store. It gives us a greater  insight as to what is new on the market.

Jane Sassman with one of her fantastic quilts showing off her fabric line from Free Spirit Fabrics. Jane has just released a new book with Dragon Threads and I think it is available now.

Lonni Rossi talking about her new fabric collection Fairmont Park for Andover Fabrics
Lonni Rossi with a quilt made with her new collection for Andover Fabrics, I can't remember it's name but I know it will be out at the start of next year.
A Quilt made using Thomas Knauer's Fabric collection for Andover Fabrics.

Photo from Amy Butler's Schoolhouse Session. This was her "fashion show" which uses her new collection and types of fabric including her new fashion sewing fabrics.

Photo from Northcott Fabric presentations showing the latest from Stonehendge. This is a range that we have in store now (in the brown colourway)
A new Christmas panel from Northcott Fabrics. This will be available next year and what is really cool is that they made a sample of this panel with lights attached to it.
Another quilt using Stonehendge fabrics from Northcott.

A fantastic quilt created by Kaffe Fassett
And another one, that is Brandon hiding behind the quilt

This quilt is designed by Kim McLean (an Aussie!) using Kaffe Fassett Fabrics, her quilts are amazing.
Barbara Brackman showing a quilt she has made using her new collection The Morris Apprentice which we will have in store (fingers crossed) next month. We have the entire collection on order.
A sneak peak of Barbara Brackman's new collection coming out next year Civil War Jubilee for Moda Fabrics (the colour of the photo will not be the colour of the fabrics I took this photo from the projected image)
The hallway during Schoolhouse lectures, everyone waiting in go into their selection rooms. There are a total of 15 session in which you can choose from around 20 different topics on offer each session. You move rooms as required and most of the session last either 30 minutes or 15 minutes. It's hectic in the hallways as everyone moves from one session to the next.
A look of the show floor taken this evening. Everyone nearly ready for the Quilt Market to start tomorrow. The store in the center bottom is Superior Thread's Stand!

More tomorrow!
