Australia Day in Berrima

Australia Day is always a popular day in the town of Berrima as the town is the host for the Southern Highland region events. During the day there are market store in the park, entertainment and at lunch time there is a street parade. Here are some photos from the day.

In Store: Mini Crafting Irons

Back in stock of these mini crafting irons. They are great for having next to your sewing machine or to take to your next workshop. They are light and portable, I also like that they have a decent size iron surface plate which makes quick work of ironing those small projects.

Upcoming Australia Day in Berrima

Each year on the 26th January the town of Berrima holds a big Australia Day celebration. It is a fantastic day in town, great for the family. There are events throughout the day including a market in the park, official ceremony, parade through town, music in the park and a jumping castle and farmyard nursery to keep the kids happy. While in town why not also check out the Berrima District Museum, the Courthouse Museum or Harpers Mansion - these museums and historic house give you a taste of the history of Berrima and are very enjoyable to visit, Harpers mansion even has a small maze (great for the kids). All the shops are open throughout the town. Berrima Patchwork will be open from 10am till 3pm so make sure you come by.
There is a road closure of the Old Hume Highway through the town of Berrima (between Oxley St and Oldbury Rd) prior to the Parade from 11:45am and then it re-opens just after the Parade has been through, so if you plan on coming by car make sure you are there no latter than 11:30!

Quilting in the Highlands 2013

Just over 6 months till Quilting in the Highlands 2013. This is a 4 day retreat in the Southern Highlands, NSW. Each workshop is for 2 days and each tutor will be holding 2 different workshops.
We have a very talented team of tutors joining us this year which include award winners (many best in show!) and authors. From the USA we have Sandra Leichner, Deb Karasik and Barbara Olson and from Australia Mariya Waters, Rachelle Denneny and Yvette Stanton. Some workshops are already full and I was just looking at the workshop enrolments and several of them have only 4 or 3 places left! Handmade Christmas Presents

Every year I try to make something for all the kids in the family. They always get so many toys that I like to give them something handmade that they can enjoy. Previous years they have received quilts, backpacks, Christmas stockings and more. I thought I would make them something that was personalised and be fun for them this year.

This year each of the kids received a pillow with their names on them.. The letters where cut out of the fabric with Steam a Seam 2 on them, then ironed onto the background fabric. I then satin stitched around each of the letters. Once the borders were added I backed the pillows with some of the Shannon's Cuddle - this is a polyester fabric, which wears really well, is excellent in the wash and has that cuddle feel to it. 

They look pretty good, but there is one more fun element to them. I use Superior Threads NiteLite Extra Glow Thread to stitch around all the letters. Once the lights are out the fun begins! This is a great way to get the kids to turn out the lights. The NiteLite Thread is available in several different colours and we have them all in stock at Berrima Patchwork.

For Zara's Pillow I used the purple and pink NiteLite Thread

For Toby's Pillow I used the blue, yellow and purple NiteLite Thread

Superior Threads states "Charge it with natural or artificial light for a few seconds and watch it glow for up to 6 hours, night after night. NiteLite ExtraGlow 40 wt. polyester and is dryer and iron safe (low/med. heat). Recommended for quilting and embroidery. Available in six shades: Yellow, Green, Blue, Pink, Purple, and White. The thread glows the color of children's glow-in-the-dark toys. White glows the brightest."

A couple of tips if you try to make these pillows.

• Get letters that look great I enlarged an alphabet that when I traced them they didn't look too good so I changed the alphabet to another one. 
• Don't forget to trace the letters in MIRROR IMAGE onto the steam a seam.
• If you use a thicker thread - use a larger eye needle on your sewing machine. 
• Use a good stabilizer when sewing the satin stitch. 
• If you are using a polyester thread, don't place a "hot" iron onto it  - I learnt this on a previous project, some of those threads melt really easily, but so far I haven't melted any from Superior Threads.
• The glow in the dark thread is great to find out if you have left out sewing any of the letters - I forgot to sew inside some of the a's. 
• You don't have to use a glow in the dark thread, variegate threads can look fantastic. 
• And lastly make sure you spell the kids name correctly (no I didn't make a mistake but when I was tracing all the letters I did forget to trace a few of them!)
